6 people taken to hospital following explosion in Stevenage

Two people are reported to be in a critical condition following a fire at a Stevenage care home.

 

UPDATE : A Man in his 80s dies and one person still critical.

 

Eight fire engines were sent to the scene along with 40 Firefighters.

 

Police, Fire and Ambulance Crews were called to Woodlands View Care Home on Magpie Crescent at 4.30 this afternoon (February 3rd, 2017), working together to evacuate the property.

“A number of ambulance service resources are at the scene including six ambulances, the Hazardous Area Response Team (HART), a rapid response vehicle, two air ambulances (one left at 6pm) and a number of ambulance officers.

 

“Ambulance crews have worked swiftly and effectively with colleagues in the police and fire service to evacuate the property and treat patients.

 

Chief inspector Gerry McDonald said: "It appears to be an explosion in one of the resident's rooms.

"The fire is now out and all residents have been accounted for. They have been evacuated from the building to a safe place.

 

 

Hertfordshire County Council social services are working closely with the care home provider, HC- One, to ensure residents are moved to alternative accommodation where necessary.

 

Sam Edwards commented on facbook "One of my lovely ladies is in this home on oxygen and bedbound with a broken leg...what a scary time, my heart was in my mouth but I have spoken to her son and she is ok....thoughts with everyone there affected xx"
